Now that’s a rather boring sounding and long title for an article, if I say so myself. Sorry.
If you read the article on this site a few days back about how the poor sap got declined for health insurance (me) which was followed by another article called “plan B” which outlined the steps I was taking to supplement my existing hsa health insurance, this is an update on where we are in the process. At a real high level, my plan, seems to think it will not provide us with any prescription coverage except if one of us is rolled into a hospital on a gurney, and then only as long as we remain on the gurney. If we get into a major medical situation and that is true, we are up the proverbial poop creek, and we’re not real interested in rolling the dice on this one.
My insurance agent is working on it, but what we are looking at is something called a critical care policy. I have not actually seen any marketing or other information on one of these policies, however, I understand that kind of works like a term life insurance policy with some benefits in the event of a major medical situation. In this case, it would pay out a lump sum, which, in theory would go a long way toward covering the prescription gap in my plan. Remember, insurance really should be used for the big stuff. Part of the reason our nation’s health care costs have gotten so out of hand is that most folks want to use it for the little basic “oil and lube” stuff as well.
At the moment my agent is having some challenges finding a plan that will cover my kids. So first it was my wife creating the challenges, now it’s my kids. Next it will probably be me. But we’ll deal with it. As I learn more, I’ll share it here.
The take away here is that when you start looking at high deductible health plans if they don’t give you the coverage you need or want exactly, there may be ways to supplement it to get the coverage. It may take some creativity too. The good news is that even if you are a creative as a rock, as long as you have a good agent who understands hsa insurance they can do the heavy lifting for you. And if they can’t, fire ‘em and find one who can. That’s one of the great things about consumer directed health. It’s about taking control. Just remember, you’re the boss.

In what state are you located? 35 states have a high risk pool that you might qualify for and they provide for all levels of care. Also, depending on your condition (which I do not know) will determine if you should consider a second company. I am not familiar with anything called a critical care policy. A critical illness policy will cover many dread diseases and pay a lump-sum if diagnosed with the same. I think perhaps a second opinion from a specialist in individual medical could be in order. One such resource is the find an agent portion of NAHU’s website (www.nahu.org). Good luck!
Great Post. Like David Block said, there are options for you. High Risk Pools, regular Major Medical Insurance and many other options that can be affordable and within reach if you know the law. My company handles cases like this day in and day out, and can get insurance even if you have brain or liver cancer. There are laws and guidelines that have to be followed, and even if you don’t meet them we can find the right insurance for you.
